SEMOS measures sensorimotor steering performance, defined as the ability to translate visuospatial information into precise, coordinated, and continuously corrected hand movements under time constraints. Visually guided manual control is required in numerous everyday and occupational situations, such as when handling tools, operating machinery, or piloting vehicles and aircraft.

Using two joysticks on the SCHUHFRIED panel, the tested person controls the position and rotation of an object that must be guided through openings in approaching walls.
